The project MareFrame encourages a more widespread use of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM). Social and economic issues are at the core of this approach, but are often given less attention than environmental aspects. MareFrame has conducted a socioeconomic impact assessment (SEIA) as a key step in the decision support process to highlight the consequences of the various management alternatives and inform stakeholders of the implications of their decisions.

Socio-economic issues in EAFM – Webinar

In this webinar, a method for evaluating management scenarios including environmental, national and business economics, as well as social implications of each management alternative using multi-criteria analysis (MCA), will be presented. This approach explores how the different, and sometimes contradictory priorities of multiple stakeholders, influence the final outcomes of the analysis. MCA makes explicit the trade-offs between multiple objectives in complex settings. It is a method for facilitating a structured evaluation of management alternatives, and can narrow down the range of ‘acceptable’ alternatives between actors with conflicting objectives.

The webinar will present you with:

A methodology for assessing environmental, social, national and business economic impacts from management alternatives within European fisheries
Insights into MCA analysis in fisheries
Some results from the applied analysis in complex fisheries within the EAFM context
A better understanding of the trade-offs between economic, social and environmental aspects involved in decision-making within fisheries management
Insight into how the priorities of decision makers and other stakeholders influence which management alternatives are considered most feasible
A chance to ask questions related to the analysis as applied in seven MareFrame case studies

The webinar will be presented by a team at Syntesa, consisting of Juliana Arias-Hansen, Researcher and Economic Analyst, with support from Magni Laksáfoss, Economic Analyst, and Olavur Gregersen, Work Package leader in MareFrame.

Nordic Project 'Everything Ashore' Completed

Syntesa have just finalised the Nordic project 'Alt i Land', translated as 'Everything Ashore'. The project was funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The main purpose of the project was to conduct a feasibility study of the 'everything ashore' concept in close collaboration with stakeholders. The project was co-ordinated by Syntesa. Other partners in the project were Matís in Iceland, Greenlandic Institute of Natural Resources and Nofima in Norway.

H2020 project ClimeFish funded

It is with pleasure that we can announce that the project ClimeFish has been granted funding as part of the H2020 framework programme for research and innovation. ClimeFish will investigate the impact of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture producers in the EU. The overall objective of ClimeFish is to support sustainable fisheries, enable an increase in European aquaculture production, facilitate employment and regional development in the sectors, and develop forecasting and management tools for adapting to CC; all in co-creation with stakeholders.

Syntesa will be work package leader, responsible for the identification of risks and opportunities of climate change. The consortium consists of 21 partners from Europe, Chile, Canada and Vietnam.

Syntesa looks very much forward to starting the work on this interesting project, which will start on April 1 2016.

ClimeFish – not a prank!

The French term “Poisson d’Avril” (’April fish’ or an ‘April Fool’) was established in the 16^th Century when the king moved the start of the year from the end of March to January 1. Those who stubbornly clung to the old calendar system had jokes played on them and a fish attached to their back.

Climate change is not an April Fool’s Day prank. It is real and is happening right now. Amongst many other concerns, climate change is threatening the sustainable growth of aquaculture and fisheries worldwide. The world population is growing, and the demand for nutritious and healthy food is increasing. Forecasts indicate an overall decline in global food production due to climate change.

Climefish is an EU research project (funded under Horizon 2020), starting on 1 April 2016. Its goal is to ensure that seafood production can increase in areas and for species where there is a potential for sustainable growth, given the expected climate developments. It will contribute to food security, robust employment, and the sustainable development of rural and coastal communities.

ClimeFish will examine alternative scenarios and conduct socio-economic analysis to identify risks and opportunities for fish production in the light of climate change. Strategies to mitigate risk and capitalize on opportunities will be identified in co-creation with stakeholders. These will serve to strengthen scientific advice and to improve long term production planning and policymaking. ClimeFish addresses three production sectors: marine aquaculture, marine fisheries and lake and pond production, including 16 case studies and more than 25 FISH species from around Europe. The ClimeFish consortium includes 21 partners from 16 countries, with scientists from universities, national research institutes and medium-sized enterprises. In July 2015 a letter of agreement was signed between FAO and NEAFC for the provision of advisory services on fisheries economics and governance in support of WECAFC reorientation. Our associate Kjartan Hoydal was commissioned by NEAFC to carry out the work for the provision. The agreement runs to 15 January 2016.

An expert meeting to assess the opportunities for a regional fisheries management organization in the Western Central Atlantic took place in Barbados, 1-2 September 2015.

A discussion paper suggesting ways forward is currently being discussed at a meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad 1-2 December 2015.

Syntesa has employed Rannvá Danielsen as a PhD candidate

R Danielsen syn Rannvá will be working with Ólavur Gregersen in the Faroese office. Rannvá will be evaluating the social desirability of fisheries after the adoption of a new management system (results-based management) in the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The project is a part of SAF21, a consortium on Social Science Aspects of Fisheries for the 21st Century. SAF21 is financed under the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme. Rannvá will also be working on other projects.

The book brings together current research on the development of technologies through the interaction of scientists, industries and farmers in the fields of animal genetics, nutrition, health and welfare. The core theme of the book is that PLF is a management tool that allows farmers to make decisions based on data and information obtained from the continuous observation of the animals and automated analysis of their behaviour. The PLF Applications book which is part of the EU-PLF project, is of particular interest to researchers, farmers, livestock industry and people who are interested in animal welfare.
